Sethurathnam Ravi, India continues to build back better in Key Sectoral Industries with Constant Signs of Economic Recovery

Sethurathnam Ravi, Sethurathnam Ravi Bse, S Ravi Bse, S Ravi Bse Chairman, Sethurathnam Ravi Bse Chairman
Sethurathnam Ravi BSE Former Chairman
Sethurathnam Ravi, popularly known as S Ravi is the former chairman of Bombay Stock Exchange Limited (BSE). Currently he is the Founder and Managing Partner of Ravi Rajan & Co., an advisory and accountancy firm, headquartered in New Delhi, India. He is also an Associate Member of Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (CFE), USA, and also a registered Insolvency Resolution Professional. According to Sethurathnam Ravi, the former BSE Chairman, diagnosing unemployment is a golden key to unleash our economic power.

Sethurathnam Ravi (S Ravi) is the former Chairman of Bombay Stock Exchange Limited (BSE) (November 2017 to February 2019) and Founder and Managing Partner of Chartered Accountants’ firm Ravi Rajan & Co., an advisory and accountancy firm, headquartered in New Delhi, India. Mr. S Ravi is a Post Graduate in Commerce and holds a diploma in Information System Audit (DISA). He is an Associate Member of Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (CFE), USA and is also registered as an Insolvency Resolution Professional.

Sethurathnam Ravi was appointed by Government of India and RBI as Chairman of the Technical Experts Committee for Punjab & Sind Bank’s Strategic Turnaround. He was also appointed by Government of India as a member of the Strategic Revival Group for UCO Bank, where he played an instrumental role in formulation of the revival plan and its subsequent implementation. He has also served as Chairman of PNB Mutual Fund.

According to Sethurathnam Ravi, India continues to build back better in key sectoral industries with constant signs of economic recovery. Today India is the sixth largest economy in the world. Significantly, the attribution also lies in the agricultural sector, which is 29.7% of total GDP. But India is witnessing a new wave of agrarian crisis. The farmers are expressing their despair and alienation with the policy framework, from MSP to loan waiver. Hence, the agricultural belts have become synonymous to suicide belts where a number of farmers are forced to take their own lives, indicating the gravity of the crisis. This is a critical issue that could put a massive strain on the economy, if it further continues.

Despite a booming economy and an increasing labour force, the process of job creation is sluggish and has become one of the principle problems that India faces. There has been a sharp increase in the employment of informal workers, but the same has to apply to the formal sector (with skills), which holds important aspect of a progressive economy.

According to Sethurathnam Ravi, “Diagnosing unemployment is a golden key to unleash our economic power”. The latest CMIE data shows that the unemployment rate in India was 8.2% in February 2019. Besides the unemployment crisis, we should also shed light on balancing the male-female employment ratio. By balancing the ratio, 235 million women will be in the workforce which can make the country richer by 27%, the former BSE Chairman highlights.

In Sethurathnam Ravi’s point of view, there must be a shift, where development is more focused towards labour intensive sectors to create more jobs to ease the employment crisis. At the same time, there must be attention paid to social development investments like, health, education, nutrition, water sanitation (directly related to health), to improve our productivity, human capital, per capita income; and most importantly there must be a greater focus on progressive taxation where additional revenue generated can be invested in social security and other essential services that can significantly boost our economic strengths and capabilities. In a nutshell, this is where we are and what we can actually work on, Sethurathnam Ravi concludes.

A discarded sex doll found on a beach in Thailand triggered panic among the locals after it was mistaken for a body of a woman. Rescuers soon rushed to the spot and allayed the fears of people on the beach by confirming that it was just a robber doll, reported Thaiger.

The doll was spotted on the Bang Saen beach in the Chon Buri province of eastern Thailand on August 18. A photo of the doll was uploaded on Facebook, which showed the doll lying on the beach with the upper half of its body covered with a shirt, the report added.

After discovering the “body”, anxious locals called the paramedics and the police who soon reported to the emergency. According to a Bang Saen district police spokesperson, rescue teams reached the spot after being informed that locals had seen a “young woman naked and unconscious”, according to Daily Star.

War Shows Russia "Not A Peer Military To US" Or Even Smaller NATO Forces

Six months into President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, the war has upended fundamental assumptions about Russia's military and economy.

When the US warned of impending war earlier this year, officials and analysts in Washington and Europe alike assumed Russia's much larger and better equipped military would quickly dominate Ukraine's forces. They also believed Putin would find himself constrained by a weak domestic economy.

US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley even warned Congress that Kyiv could fall within 72 hours of an invasion being launched. President Joe Biden said he would turn the ruble to "rubble." In the Kremlin, meanwhile, Putin and his closest advisers saw Ukraine as a nation divided with incompetent leaders that would lack the will to fight.

Study Claims Sun Will Devour Mercury, Venus And Earth

The Sun is the source of life on Earth. It radiates light and heat, or solar energy, which makes it possible for various species to flourish on Earth. But what will happen when the giant star expends all its fuel? This is the subject of a study undertaken by a group of scientists and submitted to the Astrophysical Journal. The scientists have said in the paper that five billion years from now, the Sun will lose all its life-giving powers and become a red giant.

Giving details about the chaos that will follow, the researchers said that our home, the Earth, will meet an ignominious end. They claimed that Sun will devour Mercury, Venus and possibly the Earth.

The researchers performed three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations to understand a range of outcomes after a planet is engulfed by a Sun-like star. They said that the outcomes depend on the size of the engulfed object and the stage of the star's evolution.

How active lifestyles, sports and fitness programs are enabling Arab women to beat obesity, manage weight

JEDDAH: Obesity rates worldwide have been steadily rising over the past half-century, reaching a point at which experts say many nations are way off schedule to meet the World Health Organization’s 2025 global nutrition targets.

Mindful of the pressures that high obesity rates place on local healthcare systems, to the detriment of quality of life, countries such as Saudi Arabia are working hard to promote fitness and challenge people to change their sedentary lifestyles.

According to a recent study by Ohio State University College of Medicine, obesity and the associated health implications cost the Saudi healthcare system $3.8 billion in 2019 alone, equivalent to about 4.3 percent of the Kingdom’s total annual health expenditure.

Turkey sends off new drill ship into eastern Mediterranean

ISTANBUL: Turkey’s president inaugurated the country’s newest and largest undersea hydrocarbon drill ship Tuesday that he said would head for a spot northwest of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean, which is not claimed by any other country.

“Our exploration and drilling in the Mediterranean is within our own sovereign dominion,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the ceremony in southern Mersin province, only to add: “We don’t need to seek permission or ratification from anyone.”

Turkey is embroiled in acrimonious disputes with Greece and Cyprus over maritime boundaries and offshore energy rights, which triggered high tensions in the eastern Mediterranean two years ago.

Erdogan said Tuesday the new Abdulhamid Han ship would begin drilling at the Yorukler-1 well about 55 kilometers (34 miles) off the coast of Gazipasa, in Antalya province.
“Neither the puppets nor the ones who hold their strings will be able to prevent us from getting our rights in the Mediterranean,” he said, in an apparent reference to Greece and Cyprus on the one hand, and their Western allies on the other.

In the summer of 2020, tensions escalated after Turkey sent a seismic survey ship escorted by warships to an area in the eastern Mediterranean where Greece claims exclusive rights to potential undersea oil and gas deposits. Greece sent its own warships to shadow the Turkish flotilla. Both countries later conducted military exercises as a show of force.
Turkey insists that small Greek islands near the Turkish coast should not be taken into account when delineating maritime boundaries, and accuses Athens of trying to grab an unfair share of the eastern Mediterranean’s resources.

The NATO allies routinely accuse each other of airspace violations. Turkey also claims that Greece has violated international treaties by militarizing eastern Aegean islands close to Turkey.

Daesh threat grows despite leadership losses, UN warns

NEW YORK: Despite territorial defeats and leadership losses, the threat posed by Daesh has been rising since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to persist, underlining the importance of implementing non-military measures to counter terrorism, the UN said on Tuesday.

Daesh affiliates continue to exploit conflicts and social inequalities to incite unrest and plan terrorist attacks, the organization added. Pandemic-related restrictions and the shift to the digital space have provided the group with opportunities to intensify its recruitment efforts and attract more funding, and for the past year it has increasingly been using drones in attacks, as seen in northern Iraq.

Vladimir Voronkov, the under-secretary-general for counter-terrorism and head of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism, told the Security Council that Daesh’s upward trend has been possible in part as a result of the group’s adoption of a decentralized internal structure based around a “general directorate of provinces” and associated “offices.” These are designed to manage and finance terrorist operations around the globe, from central, southern and western Africa to Europe and Afghanistan, and make it clear that the terror group has long-term goals and aspirations, he added.

“Better understanding and continued monitoring of this structure are indispensable for countering and preventing the threat posed by Daesh,” Voronkov said.

He was speaking during a meeting of the Security Council to discuss the UN secretary-general’s 15th report on the threat posed by Daesh to international peace and security. It states that this threat remains particularly high in conflict zones. However it warns that it might soon spread to more stable areas where the extremist group and its affiliates are trying to “incite fear and project strength” as they constantly work to exploit “security gaps and conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism to recruit and to organize and execute complex attacks.”

The situation, the report adds, is further exacerbated by the downturn in the global economy and rising inflation, together with the measures adopted by governments to address them.

Nasrallah speech sparks fears of power vacuum in Lebanon

BEIRUT: Doubts were cast over the upcoming presidential election in Lebanon later this year, after Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah called on Lebanese officials “to form a government that enjoys its full powers to assume its responsibilities, whether or not a new president is elected,” on Tuesday.

It was the first time Nasrallah mentioned publicly the possibility of not holding the presidential elections, raising fears of a political vacuum in the crisis-stricken country, similar to that which preceded President Michel Aoun’s election in 2016, and which lasted over two years.

Prime Minister Najib Mikati was tasked on June 23 with forming a new Cabinet, which he presented to Aoun after parliamentary elections last May.

However, Makati’s lineup did not satisfy Aoun, who said the prime minister’s choices undermined him. Communication between the two has been fraught since then, and all attempts to revive forming a government have stalled.

Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri said in a statement he thought a resolution to the impasse at this stage would require “a miracle.”

As things stand, on Sept. 1, Parliament will turn into the elective body of the office of the president, with several rounds of voting set to take place to appoint a new head of state.

Ali Darwish, a member of Lebanon’s Parliament, told Arab News: “Each party has the right to express its opinion on the next political phase the way it deems convenient. Certainly, a government enjoying its full powers is better than a caretaker government. It is a sound demand because a government enjoying its full powers can take decisions.

“We want these elections to take place, just like other events — electing a new Parliament, and tasking the prime minister with the formation of a new government — to be carried out on time. Electing a new president for the country provides stability.”

Nancy Pelosi Says Xi Jinping Reacted To Taiwan Visit "Like A Scared Bully"

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said members of Congress won't be intimidated by China's reaction to her visit to Taiwan and that Chinese President Xi Jinping was acting "like a scared bully."

Just because Xi "has his own insecurities, doesn't mean that I am going to have him do my schedule for members of Congress," Pelosi said Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show.

In a separate appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program, Pelosi said China can't control the schedules of members of Congress, and, "We're not going to be accomplices to his isolation of Taiwan."

"I think he's in a fragile place," Pelosi said, referring to China's economy. "He's acting like a scared bully."

Pelosi's stop in Taiwan last week while in the Asia-Pacific region drew a strong response from China, which conducted military exercises designed to demonstrate its ability to encircle the island and launched missiles that likely flew over Taipei and into waters Japan claims as an exclusive economic zone.

Pelosi said her trip was meant to reinforce President Joe Biden's focus on the region, though the White House has repeatedly said the decision to go was the House speaker's alone.

Cliff Collapses At UK Beach As Hot Weather Scorches Rocks:

The scorching heat that has gripped the United Kingdom is causing some unexpected havoc. In Devon, a series of dramatic cliff falls were reported in the coastal areas, leaving behind huge clouds of dust, according to The Telegraph.

It quoted local publications to say that two huge collapses and a number of smaller rock falls were reported on East Beach in Sidmouth, with pieces of cliff falling down "every half hour".

The recent rise in temperature has caused cracks in the Jurassic Coast's fragile cliffs and weakened the brittle surface and causing landslides.

The police in Devon shared a tweet about the cliff falls and warned people to avoid walking on the beach due to unstable cliffs.

Amazon denies firing staff, says made changes in hiring plans

Amazon has refuted claims of firing employees. The company said that it has made changes to hiring plans for the future. Amazon's earnings report shows that it has 100,000 fewer staff but it does not mention that employees were laid off. The e-commerce giant did not backfill when the employees left for quite some time and has also cited normal attrition as the reason behind a decrease in headcount.

In the earnings report, Amazon CFO, Brian Olsavsky said that the company had reduced headcount by almost 27,000. "On the head count, yes, I think there was more, as we mentioned in Q1 we added 14,000 workers. Prior Last year, we had reduced our net head count by 27,000. So, we were pretty transparent about the fact that we had hired a lot of people in Q1 for the coverage of the Omicron variant. Luckily, that variant subsided, and we were left with a higher head count position. That has come down through adjusting our hiring levels and normal attrition and was pretty much resolved by the end of April or early part of May. So that is dominating the quarter-over-quarter reduction in head count," Olsavky said.

Google, too, has slowed down hiring. The company CEO Sundar Pichai had informed the employees through a memo about a slowdown in hiring.

Russia Launches Iran Satellite, Stokes Ukraine Surveillance Concerns

Khayyam satellite: Russian space chief Yury Borisov hailed "an important milestone in Russian-Iranian bilateral cooperation, opening the way to the implementation of new and even larger projects", speaking at the Moscow-controlled Baikonur cosmodrome in the Kazakh steppe.

Almaty:

An Iranian satellite launched by Russia blasted off from Kazakhstan Tuesday and reached orbit amid controversy that Moscow might use it to boost its surveillance of military targets in Ukraine.

As Russia's international isolation grows following Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin is seeking to pivot Russia towards the Middle East, Asia and Africa and find new clients for the country's embattled space programme.

Russian space chief Yury Borisov hailed "an important milestone in Russian-Iranian bilateral cooperation, opening the way to the implementation of new and even larger projects", speaking at the Moscow-controlled Baikonur cosmodrome in the Kazakh steppe.

Iran's Telecommunications Minister Issa Zarepour, who also attended the launch, called the launch of the Khayyam satellite "historic" and "a turning point for the start of a new interaction in the field of space between our two countries".

Gautam Adani takes new tycoon risk to next level

MUMBAI, Aug 9 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Gautam Adani is a different sort of Indian tycoon. The 60-year-old university dropout and son of a trader is a first-generation entrepreneur who has become the world’s fourth-richest man by building and buying critical energy and infrastructure assets at lightning speed. There is none of the obvious financial profligacy that broke many of his rivals in recent years, but other concerns cast a shadow over the billionaire who is starting to get too big to fail.

At some $220 billion, the combined market value of the Adani group’s seven publicly traded companies, all of which carry the industrialist’s name, has increased tenfold in three years. Gautam Adani leads as chairman and is flanked by his wife, brother, two sons and some nephews in various roles. NASA solves mystery of 'spaghetti-like' object found on surface of Mars

Scientists were left puzzled when a weird “spaghetti-like” object was spotted on Mars by the Perseverance rover. It sparked a lot of debate online and a number of experts came up with their own explanations about the “alien” material found on July 12. However, NASA has released an official statement about the object, and they said that it was actually a part of the rover itself.

According to the official briefing by the US space agency, the Dacron netting got detached from the entry, descent and landing (EDL) gear when the rover landed on the planet in February 2021.

“This particular piece of netting appears to have undergone significant unravelling/shredding, suggesting that it was subjected to strong forces,” the blog published by NASA stated.
